Furnace
What it is
CO can escape from faulty furnaces or room heaters, or through rusty or cracked vents.
A furnace heats air and uses a blower motor and air ducts to distribute warm air throughout the house.
Dual-fuel or hybrid systems combine the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a gas furnace.

Its parts
- Inducer motor
- Move the condensate trap to the proper location depending on the orientation of the furnace. Tubes connecting the condensate trap to the inducer fan housing inside the furnace may need to be relocated.
- Heat exchanger
- Combustion gases and particles also come from chimneys and flues that are improperly installed or maintained and cracked furnace heat exchangers.
- Air filter
- Furnace and HVAC filters work to filter the air only when the system is operating.
- Check filters for forced-air furnaces, heat pumps, or air conditioners
- Portable air cleaners and furnace/HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors.
- Flue
- Have central air handling systems, including furnaces, flues and chimneys, inspected annually and properly repair cracks or damaged parts.
- Combustion air
- Direct vent combustion appliances include furnaces, boilers, and water heaters that utilize natural gas or propane that are equipped with a pipe to bring combustion air directly from outside to the combustion chamber.
- A direct-vent sealed-combustion furnace, boiler, or water heater brings combustion air directly from outdoors to the sealed combustion chamber through one sealed pipe and exhausts the byproducts of combustion (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) to the outdoors through a second sealed pipe.
If it may be unsafe
If you smell gas, leave the house and call Peoples Gas at 866-556-6002 or 911 from outside. If your CO alarm sounds or anyone feels sick, leave and call 911 from outside.
AirLogic is not an emergency service.
